Julie Mordue, Client Relationship Manager, NRG caught up with last year’s North East Contact Centre Awards ‘Sales Star’ George Udale and line manager Linzi Potts to find out what it was like to be crowned a winner.

18 months into his career with Utilitywise, George achieved 380% of his annual sales target prompting his peers to nominate him for the prestigious ‘Sales Star’ award.

Only 22 years of age at the time, George and his partner Holly were parents to 18 month old James, and were expecting their second baby.  The need to support and provide for his growing family was the driving force to his success.

George shared his personal motto ‘Measure Twice, Cut Once’ and explains that his thirst for knowledge and attention to detail combined with his personal responsibilities attributed to his success. ‘Utilitywise’s in-depth training and academy programme gave me brilliant granular detail of the energy market, enabling me to develop great supplier relationships and negotiate competitive packages on behalf of our clients, ensuring a smooth and hassle free customer journey’   

Utilitywise entered three categories in 2016; Dream Team, Customer Experience Leader and Sales Star.  The leadership team knew they had been shortlisted, but did not know for which category, so invited all nominees to the gala dinner on Friday 18th November at Ramside Hall.

George says ‘I was all suited and booted and didn’t know what to expect, it was the first time I’ve been to anything like that before. 

The shortlist was announced and I was up against two ladies from Virgin Media – I didn’t hear the runner’s up name mentioned so was totally shocked when my name was called out!

I genuinely didn’t expect to win and was overwhelmed by the whole experience.  Being on stage and having my photo taken I felt like a celebrity!  Linzi my manager was on holiday at the time and I can remember the text I sent to her ‘I’ve only gone an won!’ .

Linzi Potts, Senior Team Manager added ‘When I received the text from George to say he’d won I was chuffed to bits for him!  George is an exemplary employee, his dedication to the role and succeeding are admirable.  He is a well-respected member of the team and operation; his work ethic is fantastic and the main reason for his success.  I can’t think of anyone else who is more deserving of this award and his future success at Utilitywise is guaranteed’.

Back at Utilitywise HQ, George’s achievement was announced by Brendan Flattery, CEO, Utilitwise  at their business update ‘All Hands Session’ and was displayed on all of the TV screens throughout the contact centre floors. 

One year on from winning North East Contact Centre Awards ‘Sales Star’ 2016 and what’s next for George?  ‘I’ve recently been promoted into a new role as a Field Sales Closing Specialist which has greater responsibility.  As for management…possibly one day but at the moment  I am still learning and want to do this role to the best of my ability’
